BYOS - Reviews EFS Drink
March 2008

byos (by your own steam) reviews EFS Drink.

First Endurance EFS

Electrolyte drink designed specifically for endurance athletes Whilst the 'sports drink' market is saturated there are surprisingly few companies making products specifically for endurance events (3 hours plus). Best known in cycling circles (a Tour winner no less), EFS is now more well known by runners since sponsoring trail legend Karl Meltzer and the Montrail team.

Despite it's claims otherwise, EFS' strength lies in it's conservative and thoughtful approach to nutrition/ hydration rather than 'wonder ingredients'. It's sensible sugar ratios make it palatable yet doesn't cause me any stomach distress - and it's been tested for 24 hours as a primary fuel source. EFS is fortified with the amino acids Glutamine, Leucine, Iso-leucine and Valine - so in essence you have the benefits of proteins without the digestion issues of 'full-chain' proteins. Two flavours; Tangerine and Lemon lime with the former getting our tick for it's less sugary taste. Definitely worth trying. A more detailed review of EFS along with First Endurance’s other products in the next issue.

Procycling - PreRace
September 2007

After receiving very positive feedback from the likes of CSC’s Dave Zabriskie and the Gerolsteiner team, First Endurance has released their pre-exercise PreRace supplement onto the consumer market. It comes in flavour-free powder form that can be mixed with any drink taken before or during a ride and provides a potent-and entirely legal- jumpstart. First Endurance claims the use of PreRace will provide significant assistance in fending off fatigue, and the high caffeine content will certainly help towards this, as well as assisting in the breakdown of carbohydrate, which assists in energy production. With claims that PreRace also improves mental acuity, Procycling’s editor is already adding it to his staff’s first cup of tea in the morning.

Competitor - PreRace
November 2007

First Endurance continues to stay at the forefront of endurance nutrition by developing PreRace, a revolutionary new pre-exercise supplement that provides endurance athletes with a potent mental and cardiac jump-start prior to a race or workout. Like all First Endurance products, PreRace is legal and uses clinically effective doses of nutrients, making it the most effective pre-exercise supplement on the market. The PreRace formula provides all the ingredients needed to increase mental stamina, increase time to exhaustion, increase maximum workload, improve mental clarity and increase oxygenation of muscles. Pre Race comes as a flavor-free powder that can be added to any pre-exercise or during exercise drink mix, like First Endurance’s EFS (Electrolyte Fuel System).

PUT SOME JUICE IN YOUR TANK. This is what I don’t understand: Not long ago Taurine was banned (in the form of Red Bull) in Canada, but Absinthe wasn’t. Anyway, the PreRace powder contains 3000mg of Taurine per serving among other substances. You should drink it about 30-45 minutes before racing or riding and start with half a scoop so your body understands what’s happening.

Triathlete Magazine - PreRace
November 2007

Created to combat sluggish race starts, First Endurance’s new flavorless PreRace powdered drink (meant to mix with any energy drink) is formulated to improve mental focus and clear lactate. It also includes Quercetin, and antioxidant that improves time to exhaustion in endurance athletes. To top it off, it’s packed with 200mg of caffeine.
